State Govt to deal child trafficking cases with firmer hand, greater intensity


HNS/Imphal, Sept 6: With a keen interest on controlling child trafficking cases, the State Government is all set to construct one Children Home each in six districts of the State at a total estimated cost of Rs 1080 lakhs to be sanctioned under the Special Plan Assistance (SPA).
According to a highly reliable source, the districts where children homes are to be set up under the Social Welfare Department included Ukhrul, Chandel, Senapati, Bishnupur and Thoubal.
The said amount of Rs1080 lakhs for the construction of the six children homes have been already sanctioned under SPA. Subsequently, the top officials of the Government instructed the Social Welfare Department to look for sites where the Children Homes are to be set up. The officials concerned have also been instructed to carry out land acquisition process if needed. Accordingly, the Social Welfare Department in collaboration with the District Social Welfare officers has started the required process for setting up the children homes.
The source further revealed that from the total cost to be incurred in the construction process, 10 percent will be borne by the State Government while the remaining 90 percent will be provided by the Centre. Since the share of the Centre has already been sanctioned, the process for sanctioning the State share is also underway.
It has also been informed that the victims of child trafficking, whose names have been recommended by the respective District Child Protection Committee will be accommodated in these children homes to be constructed newly in the six districts of the State.
